What is whitening? |
Whitening is a chemical process of using carbamide peroxide at a specified concentration in a mouthguard. The procedure is most effective under a dentist's supervision.
How is whitening performed?
The safest way to perform whitening is under a dentist's supervision. At our office we offer at in-office whitening in combination with home bleaching. We request the patient to use a desensitizing toothpaste with fluoride one week prior to the procedure. At the appointment, we begin with the in-office one hour bleaching with the Zoom! light. The patient receives a custom mouthguard that conforms precisely to the contour of the patient's teeth. While at home, the mouthpiece with carbamide peroxide is placed on the teeth. The efficacy of the active ingredient does not increase after 1 hour so patients are advised not to wear the mouthpiece all night.
Are there any side effects to whitening?
Whitening can cause increased sensitivity at times but usually resolves itself after treatment. If the procedure is not performed with a mouthguard or done in-office, gingival irritation can occur.
When should whitening be performed?
Whitening can be performed for adults who are interested in lightening their teeth. Whitening depends upon each individual's inherent dental shade. Whitening should be done in the beginning of dental treatment so that crowns and veneers can complement the lighter shade.
