What is gingival disease?
Gingival disease (gum disease) is caused by bacteria deposited in the gingiva. Gingival disease can cause inflammation, bad breath, bleeding upon brushing and loss of teeth in advanced stages.
How can gingival health be improved?
Gingival health can be improved by visiting the dentist twice a year for regular cleanings/scaling and root planing. The pockets surrounding the gingiva can be measured to indicate the necessary procedures to improve the gingival health. Gum disease can become more symptomatic with medical conditions such as diabetes and immunodeficiencies so these patients may require more cleaning appointments. Patients should floss once a day, brush twice a day and brush their tongue once a day.
How does plaque form?
Plaque is the yellowish layer on teeth that forms when teeth are not cleaned. Plaque is particularly likely to form around the gum margin and between the teeth. The bacteria produces acid when in the sugar is available to it. The metabolic products of these plaque bacteria can also lead to inflammation of the gums, which leads to swelling and bleeding.
